In 1820, with revolution closing in, the Spanish rulers of Lima loaded the accumulated wealth of the city’s churches onto a merchant ship for safekeeping — gold and jewels and two solid-gold statues of the Madonna. They handed it all to a trusted English captain. It was the worst decision they ever made: he sailed off and buried the hoard, legend says, on Cocos Island, where hundreds of digs have failed. Bring the maps, the captain’s tale, and the theories on the island’s uncaught cache.
